INFORMATION ABOUT DIABETES
Diabetes occurs when your pancreas produces little or no insulin, a hormone that helps your body utilize sugar for energy. Diabetes has two types – Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes, also called insulin-dependent diabetes, often begins in childhood and may be caused by an autoimmune attack on the beta cells in the pancreas responsible for producing insulin. Type 1 diabetes cannot be managed by oral medication, diet and exercise. Someone with type 1 diabetes must take insulin to manage their diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes is more common. Approximately 10% of the American population has diabetes. Of that population, approximately 95% have type 2 diabetes. Although the symptoms and long-term complications of type 1 and type 2 diabetes are the same, their cause is different. A person with type 1 diabetes produces no insulin of their own. A patient with type 2 diabetes makes insulin, but their body is resistant. Type 2 diabetics usually can manage their diabetes with diet, exercise and oral medication. However, in some cases, the patient may also need to take insulin to manage their blood sugars.
